Nelson A. Miles and the Twilight of the Frontier Army
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Nebraska Pr (May, 1993)
Author: Robert Wooster
Average review score:

Complete Story of the Last Great CW and Frontier General
When I read this book, I really wanted to focus just on Miles and his contributions to the Indian Frontier since he virtually closed it out. I learned far more about Miles, a highly skilled and brave field commander who rose all the way to command of the Army by the Spanish American War, than I expected. I was aware of his tremendous ego but I learned more about his political intrigues, compulsion for rank, rivalries with other officers and attraction to crowds and newspapermen. Wooster takes you rather quickly through Miles' youth and astounding CW achievements and spends a good portion on Miles and the Indian Frontier. He outlines quite in impressive detail Miles constant maneuvering for command and reforms, his controversies with Generals and Presidents including Teddy Roosevelt. Miles was involved in the Sioux campaigns, Sitting Bull, Grey Beard, Cheyenne, Nez Perce and Geronimo and the Spanish American War. After reading the book you will have a mixed feel for Miles. Did he want to be in the midst of the action just to participate in an intense challenge or was it always to as a platform to achieve rank? His politics later in life were anti-Catholic and anti-immigrant but he later worked to get the Indians a better deal and he preferred the emancipation of the Philippines after the Spanish American War. He is an important read, he was even in over all command but not the field officer at Wounded Knee. Miles saw many of the most famous Chiefs at their peak and literally escorted them to their final homes, the reservations. Wooster writes an incredibly objective book on a person who contributed tremendously to our history from 1860 to 1910.

Miles' books detail the Indian Wars with historical accounts
General Nelson A. Miles wrote a detailed, history- filled accounts of the Red River Wars and other Indian battles. Illustrations by F. Remington were a big surprise to me, as it was of a direct relative, William F. Schmalsle, Indian Scout, Guide, and Courier. The rescue of the German Sisters is a heartfelt experience. The reader will feel like one is living in the Old West, with all the joys, adventures, and tribulations that the characters experienced. The references in the back offer one further insight into the past. As Miles was involved in other battles besides those with the Indians, the history buff will find a lot of references in the back of the book which will result in many hours of pleasurable research and reading. The General Miles history trail may lead you to a long lost relative, as I found out, with numerous sources of information. So try reading the General Miles books from your library and if you like, order them from Amazon and take them home, or take them camping in the woods and plains, visit the historical places mentioned.

Terror on the Moons of Jupiter
Published in Hardcover by Pocket Books (June, 1981)
Author: Victor, II Appleton
Average review score:

Great Introduction to Sci-Fi for Youngsters
This particular incarnation of the Tom Swift series is a great place for young boys to discover science fiction. The stories are entertaining and do a good job of holding one's attention, plus the author attempts (with varied success) to weave in actual science here and there. I say the books are good for young boys because the protagonist is of course Tom Swift, and the format the adventure-story favored by many young boys, but the character Anita does offer a strong (but almost tomboyish) female role as well.

This second story in the series features Tom on a mission to explore the moons of Jupiter, where he and his friends find an alien space probe trapped on Io. They must free the probe while avoiding deadly sabotage from within their mission and the harsh, volcanic environment of Io.

The Greatest Summer Yet
I was looking around in my high school's library, last year, when I first saw the novel "That Summer" standing on the shelf. Finding the cover, and the summary very interesting, I went, and borrowed it. After reading just a few paragraphs of the story, I was hooked. I finished the whole thing in one sitting. It was one of the best novels I've ever read. I enjoyed reading about the adventures of Annie Merrill in her first summer on her own. Little did she know that this particular summer would be the most important one in her life as she finds love, and friendship with two special people. Every single character she ran into, I found memorable; Georgia, Oscar, Ruth, etc. Especially Georgia, and Oscar. Those two cracked me up. What with Georgia's bouncy personality, and Oscar's questionable obcession with sex, how could they not fail in making you laugh? I recommend "That Summer" to anyone 15 or older. Prepare for a good read, folks. Even out of print, "That Summer" will always remain dear to me, and also for you after you have finished laughing and crying your head off over the darn thing.

Tom Swift Among the Diamond Makers
Published in Paperback by Indypublish.Com (December, 2002)
Author: Victor, II Appleton
Average review score:

Thrilling predicaments and action make this one a winner!
The cream of the 'Tom Swift' crop, 'Diamond Makers' revolves around a concept fascinating even among today's technology. Many of the other books depend on then-jaw-dropping inventions to keep the interest going [such as TV cameras, zeppelin-like contraptions, and others]. But this one is a standout. It tells the story of a secret laboratory hidden in a mountain, and the criminals who attempt to harness the diamond-making apparatus for themselves. Quicker to culminate than most Tom Swifts, 'Diamond Makers' only picks up momentum until the final, shattering climax. Tom Swift is at his best in this one, and you won't want to miss out on the action!
